Everything you need to know about “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”

The 2021 Indianapolis 500 is set to return Memorial Day Weekend, and fans can’t wait to catch the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. For more than 100 years, the unique combination of speed, competition, and tradition has made this the most famous race in motorsports. In anticipation of race day, we wanted to share 11 fun facts about the Indy 500 that help explain why we and so many others love it.

1. The Indy 500 started in 1911 thanks to Indiana auto dealer Carl Fisher, who was determined to make his race the biggest racing event in the U.S. That year, driver Ray Harroun won in a Marmon Wasp, which got its name from its yellow paint color and tail shape.

2. Early race organizers wanted to create an all-day spectacle for racing fans. They settled on a distance of 500 miles, which took Harroun six hours, 42 minutes, and eight seconds to complete in 1911. Of course, as auto-racing technology advanced, so did speed. The most recent winner, Takuma Sato, finished the 500 in just over three hours.

3. One lap around the track equals 2.5 miles. Drivers navigate four distinct turns and straightaways; each of the four turns is banked at 9 degrees, 12 minutes. This has remained unchanged since the track opened in 1909.

4. The Indianapolis Motor Speedwayofficially opened in June 1909 with a balloon race, followed by motorcycle and automobile races later that summer. Today, the Racing Capital of the World hosts millions of fans every year at not only the Indy 500, but also NASCAR events, the INDYCAR Series, and the SCCA Runoffs. You can also explore the history of racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, which features one of the world’s premier collections of automotive and motor racing vehicles and artifacts.

5. Three drivers have won the Indianapolis 500 four times: A. J. Foyt, Al Unser, and Rick Mears. Unser holds a few other records, too: oldest winner at age 47 (and 360 days, to be precise); most laps led in a career (644); and the longest span between first and last victories, a total time of 17 years (1970 and 1987).

6. Janet Guthrie (also a trained physicist and aerospace engineer) became the first woman to compete in the Indianapolis 500 in 1977. The following year she placed ninth and later disclosed she drove with a broken wrist suffered during a charity tennis match.

In all, 11 women have attempted to qualify; nine of them raced. Among those women, Danica Patrick finished highest, coming in third in 2005. She also completed the most career laps among female drivers with 1,404 laps.

7. The number three might be one of the luckiest numbers in racing. Cars with the number three have seen victories more than any other (11 wins). The last was in 2009, with three-time Indy 500 champ Helio Castroneves behind the wheel.

8. The Americans hold a clear advantage at the Indy 500, but the United Kingdom boasts eight wins among five drivers, including three-time winner Dario Franchitti.

9. One of the most recognizable trophies across all sports, the Borg-Warner Trophyhas been bestowed upon winners since 1936. A Chicago company designed the sterling silver cup for $10,000; today, it’s valued at more than $1 million.

The winner of each Indianapolis 500 race has their face sculpted onto the trophy on its own square. The original set of squares was filled by 1986. A new base was added in 1987, and again in 2004, to accommodate more victors. With the base, it stands at just under 65 inches tall and weighs approximately 110 pounds.

10. Indiana can sometimes get quite hot in late May, leading many fans to wonder why the winner of the Indianapolis 500 drinks a bottle of milk to celebrate victory. It was a tradition started unintentionally by three-time winner Louis Meyer. After winning in 1933, he reached for a glass of buttermilk, a family treat on warm days. When he did it again after winning in 1936, the Milk Foundation saw a photo and swore to make drinking milk from a glass bottle an official race day tradition — something that didn’t catch on until 1956, when milk companies began to sponsor the race purse.

Today, a crew of “milk people” (real dairy farmers!) guard, transport, and deliver the ice-cold milk in specially engraved glass bottles.  

11. The Tin Pan Alley pop tune “Back Home Again in Indiana”is a sentimental favorite during the Indy 500 pre-race ceremony. Classic car collector and opera singer James Melton sang “Indiana” with the Purdue University Band on race morning in 1946. Fans loved it, and within a few years, the song earned its current spot just before the firing of the engines. Popular singers including Mel Tormé and Dinah Shore have performed it, along with Jim Nabors (of The Andy Griffith Show), who sang it nearly every year from 1972 to 2014.

Entry rules

Safety experts are encouraging venues and event organizers to adopt safety measures to protect fans and staff. These will vary from location to location, of course, but will likely impact how you arrive at and enter your event. Give yourself plenty of time to get to the event venue to account for new entry rules and safety protocols such as:

• Contactless entry, such as digital tickets on your phone
• Designated entry time assignment to avoid long lines
• Contactless, noninvasive temperature checks and/or verbal COVID questionnaires

Seating considerations

The days of crowded stands and packed general admission areas aren’t likely to return just yet. Be prepared for social distancing measures to be in place, such as grouping seats or boundaries between seats. And of course, depending on when and where your event takes place, masks will likely be required whenever you aren’t eating or drinking.

Sanitary measures

Event officials will likely make some changes to the venue to ensure everything stays as sanitary as possible, including updates to the concession areas. For example, at the Preakness Stakes, there will be no buffets or shared service; instead, guests can purchase food and beverages individually. You can also expect to find convenient hand sanitizing stations around the event.

Each venue and event organizer may implement their own safety 

guidelines, so check with the Superior team or the venue’s website for the latest detailed information before you attend.

What you can do

There are also several things you can do to protect yourself and others, in addition to the measures being put in place by event organizers.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends, when possible, keeping a distance of at least six feet from those you don’t live with or aren’t traveling with. The more people you interact with, the more closely you interact with them, and the longer the interaction, the higher your risk of getting and spreading COVID-19. Even if you’re excited to see old friends or meet new people, avoid physical contact (handshakes and hugs).

Masks can make a difference when physical distancing is difficult — such as at a crowded sporting event or concert — so bring a well-fitting mask you’ll be comfortable wearing throughout the day or night.

Use common sense: wash your hands or sanitize your hands often and cover coughs and sneezes with the inside of your elbow.

Finally, if you’re feeling sick, have symptoms consistent with coronavirus, or have had close contact with a person who has tested positive or has symptoms of COVID-19, do not go to the event.

There have only been 13 Triple Crown champs since 1875

The Triple Crown is awarded to the three-year-old Thoroughbred that, in a single season, wins the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. Since 1875, only 13 horses have achieved the elusive success of the Triple Crown, starting with Sir Barton in 1919 (although no one recognized the achievement at that time), and most recently, Justify in 2018. Justify was the first undefeated horse to achieve the Triple Crown since 1977.

These are spring “jewels”

The Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes are run between early May and early June. There are dozens of other high-profile races throughout the year, but these three races are known as the jewels of the Triple Crown.

Belmont Stakes is the longest

The Belmont Stakes is the longest of the three races; at 1.5 miles, it’s sometimes called the “Test of the Champion.”

There’s serious cash at stake

A Triple Crown winner (or, rather, his owners) can stand to take home more than just a trophy. In 2019, the Kentucky Derby purse was raised to $3 million (to be split among the top finishers); the Preakness and Belmont Stakes offer total purses of $1.5 million.

The Kentucky Derby isn’t the oldest race

The Kentucky Derby is considered America’s most prestigious horse race, but both the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes have been around longer. The first Belmont Stakes was held at Jerome Park in the Bronx in 1867. The first Preakness Stakes was run at Pimlico Race Course in Maryland in 1873. Two years later, Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. (grandson of famed explorer William Clark) founded Churchill Downs. Around 10,000 people attended the first Kentucky Derby in 1875.

It wasn’t always the Triple Crown

Although all three races began decades earlier, it wasn’t until the 1930s that the three races were widely known by the term Triple Crown.

There have been close calls

Between 1979 and 2014, another 13 horses nearly claimed the Triple Crown, winning both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, but falling short at the Belmont Stakes.

Each race has a floral tradition

A sports columnist bestowed the nickname “Run for the Roses” upon the Kentucky Derby in the 1920s, but the tradition dates back to 1884 when Clark began gifting the winning jockey a bouquet of roses. The winner of Belmont Stakes is given a blanket made of hundreds of white carnations. A blanket of black-eyed Susans covers the winner of the Preakness.

Mint juleps used to be medicinal

Pack smart

Even under normal circumstances, it’s a good idea to keep hand sanitizer handy and bring disinfectant wipes to clean high-touch surfaces such as airplane tray tables or your surfaces in your hotel or rental home. As of March 2021, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has updated the size of hand sanitizer bottles you’re allowed to carry on board from 3.4 ounces to 12 ounces.

Face coverings are required on commercial airline flights and likely in most public spaces at your destination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends washing cloth masks or disposing of single-use masks when they get dirty or after a full day’s use, so consider bringing the same number of masks as the number of days you’ll be away from home. If you’re bringing reusable masks, pack a bag to seal up used masks to avoid additional contamination.

Suggestion: pack snacks for travel days if you don’t want to stop at grocery or convenience stores.

Here is Mayo Clinic’s safe-travel packing supplies checklist:

• Cloth face masks
• Alcohol-based hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol)
• Disinfectant wipes (at least 70% alcohol) for surfaces

Protect yourself and others

The CDC has published a list of steps to take when you travel to protect yourself and others from COVID-19:

• Get fully vaccinated for COVID-19 as soon as you are eligible. Wait two weeks after getting your vaccine (second dose, if you’re getting a two-part vaccine) to travel — it takes time for your body to build protection after vaccination.
• Get tested with a viral test 1-3 days before you travel. Keep a copy of your test results with you during travel in case you are asked for them. Do NOT travel if you test positive.
• Check travel restrictions before you go.
• Wear a mask over your nose and mouth when in public settings. Masks are required on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States and in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations.
